Austrian potter Matthias Kaiser has been spending a good a part of his time in the West African country of Benin over this past two years. The cast aluminum Wayward Vase was produced during his stay in Porto Novo earlier this year.
Artist Comment:
A simple Korean rice bowl becomes a prized item only when put in a different context, say in the Japanese tea ceremony. What I admire in the aluminum work is this same quality, an innocent beauty that is not self conscious. My design draws partly on the well established wayward vase and partly on voodoo masks used in traditional ceremonies in Benin.
Matthias Kaiser
Matthias Kaiser has had a long history with Japan, having apprenticed with two Japanese master potters in Seto and Karatsu and exhibiting his work in Japan on several occasions. Evidence of his extensive travels is revealed in his pots which show influences in their forms that range from Bauhaus inspired shapes to simple Korean vessels, and pots from Africa, Iran and the Indian subcontinent.
