Iron Kettle - Hanetsuki Itome
Nobuho Miya’s Hanetsuki Itome tetsubin (Iron kettle) is cast from a single use mould, a time consuming practice that is reserved for only high end tetsubin and ensures the finished kettle has a richly detailed surface. The kettle is lightweight, making for easy everyday use. Reducing the weight of the kettle entails producing a thinner kettle, which means a greater risk of failure in the production process. The kettle has an exquisitely thin handle, hand hammered for a subtlely textured finish by an artisan specialising in the production of handles.
The exterior of the kettle is finished with Urushi ( Japanese lacquer ) to prevent rusting while the interior has a thin oxide film that results from the casting process. The film enacts with minerals in the water when water is boiled softening the water for a more pleasant taste and better cup of tea.
